Position Summary                                                                                                                                                      
Enforces regulations governing sale and shipment of plants and detection and management of exotic and invasive pests. Assist with cogongrass Eradication, Asian Longhorned Beetle Eradication, and CAPS/PPA7721 pest detection surveys. Serves an assigned territory and in locations throughout the State. Other duties as assigned.

 

Job Duties     

40% - Essential - Survey and Inspection: Conducts surveys and inspections to determine compliance with the Federal Plant Protection Act, the SC Crop Protection Act, and other Federal and State legislation. Supports ongoing plant protection, quarantine, and eradication efforts. Surveys nurseries, forests, farms, and apiaries to detect plant pests and pathogens. Inspects nurseries, greenhouses, lumber yards, and other agricultural sites for issuing licenses, export permits, or compliance agreements.


25% - Essential - Compliance: Inspects and reviews business records and physical facilities at commercial nurseries, greenhouses, and farms for compliance with the Federal Plant Protection Act, the SC Crop Protection Act, and other Federal and State regulations. Conducts interviews, obtains affidavits, and reviews records for physical and documentary evidence.


25% - Essential - Education and Outreach: Participates in educational and public outreach activities, including home shows, mass-media appearances and classroom presentations for the Department of Plant Industry and in cooperation with other elements of the University and other State or Federal agencies.


10% - Essential - Reporting: Submits electronically all appropriate reports detailing the findings of each inspection or investigation. Assist with survey data collection and grant reporting.

 

Minimum Requirements     

A high school diploma and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health. A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience.
Licenses - Drivers License Class D normal

 

Preferred Requirements     

Education - Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or other Ag or Science related field or commensurate experience (Horticulture or other Ag/Science).

Work Schedule   

Standard Hrs: 37.5; Expected Salary Range: ($ 41,800.00 - $ 45,000.00)
