Background Information

The Ecosystem Services Market Consortium LLC (ESMC) is a member-driven consortium working with partners and collaborators across the agricultural supply chain and value chain to build, test and launch a technologically advanced ecosystem services market conceived and designed for the agricultural sector. ESMCs market program will reward and incentivize producers for beneficial impacts of sustainable agricultural systems that are demanded by consumers, society, and the agricultural supply chain. ESMC’s research arm, the Ecosystem Services Market Research Consortium (ESMRC), is investing in critical R&D for a cost-effective, scalable, harmonized market to scale the beneficial impacts of sustainable systems adoption on working agricultural lands.


The ESMC market meets corporate and societal needs by quantifying, monitoring, verifying and certifying environmental outcomes in a transparent, credible science-based program. Four ESMRC Working Groups made up of Member representatives and supported by Science Advisors chosen from a slate of national experts have been established and tasked with developing and implementing specific research and development initiatives. The Working Groups focus on the research, development, demonstration and deployment of cost-effective, scalable technologies and investments to further develop, refine, and launch the fully functioning market.

The role of the ESMRC Research Coordinator is to facilitate and coordinate the Working Groups and to provide administrative, strategic, and technical support to achieve measurable progress towards accomplishing the goals, objectives, and outcomes of ESMRC.

ESMRC Research Coordinator

ESMRC seeks an energetic Research Coordinator (FTE contractor) with experience in the agricultural field to join a small and dynamic, fast-paced team environment. The role requires a proactive self-starter approach, complex decision making, and close coordination with the ESMC  Program Director, Project Managers, Post-docs/Research Scientists, and Working Group
technical experts to initiate innovative research projects, guide development and implementation, coordinate RFP releases and reviews, synthesize information, cross-fertilize ideas and learnings across all the Working Groups, and lead project tracking and reporting, including in field demonstrations and pilot projects. The Research Coordinator’s primary role will be facilitating and guiding Working Group efforts with additional technical support from ESRMC Post-docs/Research Scientists, providing oversight and coordination of multiple projects and requires consistency and coordination across Working groups, R&D projects, and pilots/field demonstrations, as well as documentation and reporting of outcomes.


A dedicated Research Coordinator will enable consistent direction and support for WG’s, while working closely with the
ESMRC Program Director who oversees program development and will provide strategic guidance to the Research Coordinator and the WG’s as appropriate and necessary. The Research Coordinator and the Program Director also must integrate and align their work into other ESMC team activities, including aligning with protocol adaptation and refinement teams and pilot
project teams.


Responsibilities and deliverables:
  • Facilitate and lead ESMRC Working Group activities:

    • Facilitate/mediate project concept development and coordinate technical discussions on Working Group and Strike Team calls and meetings, including input from ESMRC Postdocs/Research Scientists
    • Provide input on identification and prioritization of RDD&D projects that met ESMRC goals and objectives as established by grant awards and as further influenced by technical working group members;
      • Establish and maintain relationships with Working Group participants and Science Advisors to maximize contributions of expertise and synergies with member projects 
      • Coordinate and support Project Advisory Committees for individual ESMRC Working Group projects
      • Work collaboratively with Working Group Project Advisory Committees to support drafting, and solicitation of project RFPs and reviews of proposals
      • Lead monthly Science Advisor cross-pollination and coordination calls
      • Provide technical updates during Member calls and at periodic in- person (no travel due to COVID-19 pandemic through at least January 31, 2021) or virtual Member Meetings 
  • Provide organizational and administrative support to ESMRC Working Group activities:
    • Coordinate and lead the work of Post-doc/Research Scientist technical experts assigned to support Working Group projects and activities;
    • Organize and document guidance on research design, data collection, implementation, documentation and reporting requirements to achieve consistency across Working Groups and meet reporting and publication requirements;
    • Coordinate and standardize (SOPs) data collection and storage across multiple ESMC subcontracted projects and pilots and identify opportunities for cross-project analyses;
    • Ensure appropriate tracking, completion and reporting of project results necessary to achieve goals and objectives of grant requirements; and 
    • Support efforts of Working Groups and Strike Teams to meet grant objectives
  • Coordinate ESMRC Working Group activities with ESMC team:
    • Support and coordinate Working Group activities and outcomes with ESMC Project Managers leading pilot projects and field demonstration activities;
    • Coordinate support for pilot project leads and partners on implementation of research and micro-research opportunities as part of pilot projects and field demonstrations, and ensure data collection and outcomes reporting supports ESMC program enhancements; to ensure alignment with other ESMRC work
  • Serve as the data  gatekeeper for sharing of pilot project data components with appropriate ESMRC Working Group Project Leads in accordance with ESMC data privacy and security policy. 
  • Assist in documentation and reporting of research project results to Protocol Team, modelers and platform developers, ESMC and ESMC/ESMRC members, including FFAR 
  • Support drafting of ESMC reports
  • Support publication of appropriate results and outcomes
  • Other tasks as appropriate and necessary 

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in agriculture, natural sciences, environmental sciences, conservation, or related field and 3 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Understanding of the science underlying the agriculture industry, ag conservation and sustainability efforts, and ecosystem markets
  • Experience leading and facilitating teams and working across teams and communicating with a diverse range of people from technical and non-technical backgrounds 
  • Experience leading, developing, and implementing agricultural research and in-field projects and experience with project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and make complex decisions in a start- up organization where uncertainty can be high with an ability to prioritize needs and seek further information as necessary to make decisions as well as know when to seek team input for decisions 
  • Ability to self-manage time and responsibilities, with proficiency in prioritizing tasks, organizing time and managing multiple activities to meet deadlines; strong organizational and project management skills, accuracy, and attention to detail 
  • Experience in writing, editing, and proofreading, ability to compile and synthesize divergent sources of information to create cohesive reports and recommendations
