A forestry regional specialist's job is to lead and serve as an expert with focus on one or more specific programs. The programs a Forestry Regional Specialist is assigned are subject change. Programs region specialists lead include fire suppression, fire prevention, silviculture, timber, forest health, roads, enforcement, ecological classification, cooperative forest management, terrestrial invasive species, lands, and recreation.

All MN DNR foresters have to work overtime and on-call hours during fire season which is usually about eight to ten weeks in the spring and four to six in the fall but sometimes fire season can last all summer, too. During fire season foresters have to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays and occasionally have to travel and work overnight to assist neighboring areas.

These are union jobs represented by the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE). Health, dental, vision, and life insurance, paid vacation, holiday, and sick leave. Minnesota State Retirement System pension and pre-tax retirement account investment opportunities set State of Minnesota jobs apart. Medical insurance for a single employee costs about $40 a month out of pocket and medical insurance for an employee's family is about $250. Compensation beyond an employee's paycheck including insurance, retirement, Medicare, and Social Security benefits is worth an additional 30% of an employee's annual salary.
