Sr. Underwriter, CL

The Sr. Underwriter role will have responsibility for underwriting and managing a portfolio for key farm agency partners. Strong communication, negotiation and customer service skills are preferred. On-the-job training will be provided during the first 9 weeks of employment. Farm, commercial lines or agribusiness experience or exposure is desired.

In addition to the Des Moines and Columbus offices this role will also be considered for all remote locations in a work-from-home capacity.

The compensation grade for this role is E3.

These roles can be filled at the Sr Underwriter or Underwriter level based on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.


Job Description Summary

Typically SM accounts - Accepts, retains and prices moderate to high exposure new, renewal and endorsement commercial business policies based on granted authority. Provides other underwriting technical support with moderate direction. Works within broad limits of authority on underwriting assignments of high technical complexity, typically within assigned territory. Provides guidance and assistance to lower level underwriters and other functional areas. Works within broad limits of authority on underwriting assignments of high technical complexity. Provides guidance and assistance to lower level underwriters and other functional areas as appropriate. Partners with assigned agencies and field sales underwriters to consult on and develop business opportunities.


Job Description

Reporting Relationships: Reports to supervisor or manager; no direct reports.                                                                                                     

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Gathers information from multiple sources according to company guidelines, in order to perform underwriting analysis. May require gathering verbal information or data through reports or other electronic means.
  • Reviews individual risks for acceptability and handles those within authority based on company underwriting guidelines and standards. Underwriting analysis requires review of total relationship leveraging all available information pertaining to the book of business.
  • Manages workflow and intricacies of underwriting increased volume of work to maintain service level goals, utilizing company tools and systems. Ensures file handling quality and workflow efficiency. May manage larger, more complex work that requires working with and through others to meet overall project timelines and maximize workflow. May assist in managing work inventories within the unit.
  • Underwrites new business, renewals and endorsements. Decisions at this level may require review of additional variables, leveraging agency relationships, inspection reports and evaluation of exceptions. Reviews for acceptability and handles those within authority using company underwriting guidelines and standards. May negotiate price and coverage as appropriate to book of business.
  • Plans completion of assignments to meet agreed upon timelines and service level agreements, as well as projects of increased complexity which may include utilizing available reports and data.
  • Proactively consults with agents and internal partners to resolve business issues and projects of moderate complexity requiring more discernment or robust solutions. Understands organizational capabilities and opportunities to drive maximum value of relationships. Identifies and drives opportunities for business development.
  • Communicates with agents and other internal and external business partners by requesting and providing requested information.
  • Strengthens agency relationships through quality contact on underwriting matters, promoting profit and new business growth, renewal retention and service capabilities. Participates in the review and analysis of agency business performance as a part of the underwriting team environment.
  • Responds to requests from agents and underwriting staff with resolution within established time and service standards in order to facilitate and expedite service needs. Routes calls and higher level issues to appropriate individuals. May handle escalated customer service issues.
  • Educates internal and external partners on underwriting process, practice and tools. Helps train less experienced underwriting staff. May participate in training development or delivery as a subject matter expert.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Typical Skills and Experiences:


Education:  Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Completion of INS, AU or similar designations with progress toward CIC and/or CPCU is preferred.

Experience: Typically three years of underwriting experience preferred. Experience leading or working on complex projects and or teams preferred.

Knowledge: Commercial underwriting policy, practices and procedures. Rating plans and plan concepts. State and Federal insurance laws and regulations. Commercial insurance processing systems. Working knowledge of company operations and products. 

Skills/Competencies:  Verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of internal and external contacts. Ability to evaluate and recommend solutions to work-related problems. Ability to analyze insurance risks to determine the degree of acceptability and pricing. Effective time management skills and competencies preferred. Ability to operate PC and related software. Ability to advise agents and agency staff on commercial contracts, procedures and business practices.

This Agribusiness field underwriter role will have responsibility for the Illinois / Wisconsin / Indiana territory.

This is a work from home position requiring extensive travel and includes a company car. Central Illinois is preferred for the location.

Farm or Agribusiness experience or exposure is strongly desired.


This position can be filled at either the Sr Field Underwriter or the Field Underwriter level depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.


The compensation grade for this role is FSD95.


Job Description Summary

Responsible for independently generating new, profitable commercial lines business production from agencies in assigned territory. Has an expert level of knowledge in commercial insurance contracts and is familiar with the various policy languages and endorsements. Works in partnership with sales managers in assigned territory to extract new business from the agency force to review, quote, inspect and issue. Continues to expand and enhance agency/company relationships for the purposes of writing new business. Achieve the territorial strategic and operating plan objectives for profit, production, and service


Job Description

RELATIONSHIP:  Reports to Manager or Director.  No direct reports.



1. Within delegated authority levels and company guidelines, accepts, rejects, or modifies new commercial lines business to ensure profitability.  Prices business according to company underwriting and pricing guidelines, and ensures standards for timelines are met. 

2. Accurately evaluate risk exposures of the most complex nature.  Underwrite new business, review apps., select business to quote and reject the business that is unacceptable, class and price according to guidelines.  Underwriting also includes reviewing MVR's, financial reports and loss control reports.

3. Gather competitive data, prepare reports, and perform loss control inspections. 

4. Conduct routine field inspections of accounts, with and without agents.    Make recommendations based on findings.  Make accurate assessments of future agency potential and be able to communicate/discuss the assessment with agency partners in a positive and professional manner.

5. Expected to maintain frequent visitation schedule with all assigned agents and establish the company as the commercial lines provider of choice for the agencies in the territory.

6. Proven ability to manage heavy workload effectively and backup other team members as needed.

7. Thorough understanding of regional office strategic direction and operating plans, including goals and objectives to achieve profit and growth. 

8. Serve as a top underwriting resource.  Provide professional development knowledge and insight to team members.  May help train new field underwriters and provide them coaching as they develop in their role.

9. Conduct program and product orientation meetings in conjunction with the sales managers.



Education:  Undergraduate degree preferred.  Pursuit of technical insurance coursework such as CPCU highly desirable.

Experience:  Four to six years experience in commercial underwriting and/or portfolio management.

Knowledge: Requires advance knowledge on all aspects of commercial underwriting practices, procedures, and policies. Thorough knowledge of agency operations and field agency support needs. Strong proficiency in loss control and risk management techniques. 

Skills/Competencies:  Strong sales skills to match the emphasis on production, including the ability to make presentations and meet with all agency personnel (owners and employees).  Requires strong oral and written communication skills; able to convey the commercial message in a positive manner to agents.
