aBOUT PDPS:

The Prestage Department of Poultry Science (PDPS) at North Carolina State University is dedicated to support the poultry industry, consumers, and other stakeholders. Currently, the PDPS is the only program in the world with a "mini-integration" infrastructure that enables the training of students and the pursuit of research on all aspects of the modern commercial poultry production system. NC State’s PDPS is the only institution that has a Feed Mill Educational Unit, Poultry and Egg Processing Laboratories, Chicken Education Unit, Turkey Education Unit, Poultry Teaching Unit, and Animal and Poultry Waste Management Processing Facility. The PDPS mini-integration system has the unique ability to link issues in any area of the poultry industry to factors in other area(s) of the industry. This provides PDPS with the opportunity to evaluate industry relevant scenarios, collect integrated data, and provide real-world solutions.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Prestage Department of Poultry Science (PDPS) is seeking a Poultry & Egg Processing and Extension Specialist for Poultry Integrated Systems. This position will be at the Assistant Professor rank. The production of broilers, turkeys, and eggs collectively make up the largest sector (41.8% or over $5 billion) of North Carolina's total farm income. The NC poultry industry produces over 126,933 jobs and is estimated to contribute $36.6 billion to the state's GDP.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The key duties of this faculty position are to develop an extension (60%), research (30%), and teaching (10%) program consistent with the needs of the North Carolina commercial poultry industry in the area of poultry & egg processing and with the individual's area(s) of expertise. The expectation for this faculty member is to provide expertise related to improving the processing of poultry and eggs associated with integrated poultry production. The faculty member will create a program related to muscle and egg physiology, chemistry, and biochemistry to assist the poultry meat and egg processing industry. The successful candidate is also expected to work collaboratively to address preharvest and postharvest challenges and opportunities in the poultry and egg processing arena. This faculty member will also address State and Federal rules and regulations governing the processing of poultry meat and eggs.

 

The faculty member is expected to secure extramural funding to support extension/outreach and research activities, and collaborate with other departmental and University faculty to generate a multidisciplinary program. The successful candidate is expected to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. They will also be responsible for mentoring, advising and directing graduate students. This faculty member will work closely with the commercial poultry and egg industry as well as interact with other departmental, regional and national University faculty, Extension faculty, Extension field faculty, agribusiness colleagues, commodity associations, and representatives of government agencies.

Position Requirements: Minimum of a Ph.D. in Poultry Science, Animal Science, Food Science, Meat Science or other closely related field with knowledge and understanding of poultry and/or egg processing. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills to convey scientific information to broad and diverse audiences. Must demonstrate the ability to obtain extramural funding.

 

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in integrated poultry and egg processing.
  • Extension experience.
  • Record of securing extramural funding.
  • Undergraduate or graduate teaching experience.
  • Publications relating to position description.
  • S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulatory knowledge or experience.

 

 

Salary: Commensurate with experience.
