Consumer Horticulture Extension Specialist

Job summary

The Consumer Horticulture Extension Specialist will develop and deliver educational materials in the area of consumer horticulture (plants, garden, landscape, and lawn related subject matter) to the general public.

The Consumer Horticulture Extension Specialist will develop and deliver educational materials in the area of consumer horticulture (plants, garden, landscape, and lawn related subject matter) to the general public. This individual will work collaboratively across departments and with Purdue Extension Educators to support consumer horticulture programs and information needs in Indiana communities as well as provide horticulture expertise and support for the Purdue Extension Master Gardener Program.


Additional duties will include but are not limited to:
  • Coordinating educational outreach efforts for the general public in home gardening and landscape topic areas to groups such as garden clubs, civic groups, professional and community organizations, Master Gardener Associations, etc.
  • Collaborating with Extension Educators, Extension Specialists, Plant-Pest Diagnostic Lab, serving as a statewide content specialist for consumer horticulture.
  • Providing content to assist with updates to consumer horticulture portions of the Purdue Extension Master Gardener Program curriculum
  • Developing new and updating current consumer horticultural information to disseminate through publications, videos, websites, social media posts, blogs, and programming for consumption by the general public
  •  Responding to public inquiries related to consumer horticulture information via phone, email, letter, or social media posts
  • Serving on regional or national committees for professional organizations related to consumer horticulture (i.e. American Society of Horticulture Science, National Initiative for Consumer Horticulture, Garden Communicators International, American Community Gardening Association, etc.)
Required:
  • Master’s degree in horticulture or related field
  • 4 years related work experience
  • Ability to work with diverse audiences
  • Communication skills: oral presentation/teaching, listening, and technical writing
  • Leadership and Organizational skills: ability to work with and lead teams
  • Knowledge of computers/technology: online reporting, collection/organization of educational impact data, and use of other software and website applications
  •  Travel to county, state, regional or national meetings or events as needed
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license

  •  Purdue will not sponsor employment authorization for this position.
  • A background check is required for employment in this position.
  • FLSA: Exempt (Not Eligible For Overtime)
  •  Retirement Eligibility: Defined Contributions Immediately
