Summary of Job Duties:

Summary:
The Center of Excellence for Poultry Science is seeking applicants for a new faculty and extension specialist position to work with current faculty and stakeholders in poultry husbandry, production, and management in Arkansas. The poultry industry is a vital segment of the Arkansas economy with currently over 6000 farms in the state and growth continuing in the Northeast (NE) and Southwest (SW) areas of the state. The Arkansas poultry industry has broiler, layer, turkey, and gamebird segments as well as a diverse allied industry supporting all facets of commercial poultry production.

Duties:
Extension: Responsibilities for this position will include development and implementation of science-based educational outreach programs to increase producer knowledge and understanding of poultry husbandry, production, and management. The educational outreach will be delivered using both traditional and digital platforms, and outcome assessments will be developed. The successful candidate will be expected to provide state and regional leadership in poultry production and management through interactions/collaborations with industry personnel, governmental agencies, county-based extension agents, extension specialists, and research-oriented faculty in poultry science and related disciplines.

Research: Responsibilities include developing and applying research techniques related to commercial poultry husbandry, production, and management; potentially including, but not limited to the specific areas of lighting, ventilation, water quality, and/or flooring systems. Moreover, this individual would be expected to contribute to the emerging Division of Agriculture's Precision Agriculture Program. This applied research program would complement the individual’s extension program allowing direct interaction with commercial poultry growers and integrators to solve current management-related issues.

Teaching: Responsibilities include teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will be expected to teach one departmental poultry science production course per year, and potentially contribute to other departmental courses. Opportunities exist to interact with fellow research scientists and extension specialists through participation in various interdepartmental programs.


Qualifications:
 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Poultry Science, Animal Science, or related discipline is required. 
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Training in commercial poultry husbandry and production management is preferred. Postdoctoral and/or industry experience is highly desirable. 
  • Skills & Knowledge
  • Ability and interest to effectively contribute to interdisciplinary teams for the promotion of the poultry industry should be a goal. 
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to secure extramural funding to support applied research and extension programs are also required.
