Assistant Professor-Wetland Ecology

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Department of Environmental Sciences in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at The University of Toledo invites applications from wetland ecologist for a tenure-track assistant professor position in wetland ecology with expertise is in areas such as plant-soil interaction, nutrient cycling, or hydrology. The successful candidate is expected to develop a high quality, externally funded, collaborative and interdisciplinary research program, as well as to be a dedicated educator teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in their specialty, and mentor graduate students.

The Department (http://www.utoledo.edu/nsm/envsciences/) has 20 research-active faculty with $2-3 million in external research support annually, 35 graduate students (M.S. and Ph.D.), 200 undergraduate majors, research facilities and centers, including the Lake Erie Center, Plant Science Research Center, and Stranahan Arboretum. The University of Toledo is located at the interface of urban regions, the biodiverse Oak Openings ecosystem, the agriculturally dominated Maumee River watershed, and economically important and ecologically productive Lake Erie. This is an excellent setting to support a program of integrated research on wetland ecology. Furthermore, this position is supported by and will complement a new study on Lake Erie wetlands developed with the Department of Energy's new Coastal Observations, Mechanisms, and Predictions Across Systems and Scales (COMPASS) Pilot Project (https://ess.science.energy.gov/coastal/), for which UToledo is the lead for the Great Lakes Region.

COMPASS is focused on understanding and predicting the transformations and fluxes of carbon and nutrients as they are exchanged across terrestrial-aquatic interfaces. The goal is to advance a field- and lab- based understanding in close integration with modeling. Research spans both Chesapeake Bay and western Lake Erie coasts. The emphasis is primarily on terrestrial processes that are influenced by coastal waters. COMPASS is led by Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL) and includes national labs and research institutions in both regions, affording the opportunity for exciting and diverse collaborations.

Inquiries about the position may be sent to Song.Qian@utoledo.edu. The committee will request recommendation letters for finalists. Review of applications will begin on July 15, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.
