The University of Georgia hosted the first Georgia Chapter Collaboration Project with the Fort Valley State University.
Fort Valley State University and the University of Georgia created a MANRRS collaborative event among the only chapters in their state. The collaboration included ice breakers, interactive team activities, best practices, and community service with the Athens Land Trust West Broad Farm.
The West Broad neighborhood was established around the community’s historic African American schools. As home to several of Athens’ first African American churches, schools, and institutions, the neighborhood has been important to the community for nearly 150 years.
The physical and cultural centerpiece of the neighborhood is the now-vacant West Broad School. In the early 1900s, the school’s principal established garden plots for students to grow food for their families and offered evening courses for adults in cooking and nutrition.
The collaboration effort included 11 students and 4 advisors. UGA hosted the inaugural event for Spring 2018 thanks to the help of advisors and student leaders in both chapters and support from Dr. Victoria David, Director of Diversity in the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Fort Valley will host the second Georgia Chapter Collaboration in Spring 2019.
